NIWA's principal scientist Chris Brandolino told The Country's Jamie Mackay that despite the current lack of drought in New Zealand, 'drought-like impacts' may still be present.
“We’re on the cusp of drought for sure,” he added.
Weather forecasts for eastern parts of the country have reached 30C for this weekend.
