Five Auckland schools have been found in breach of rules around imposing fees on students and their parents.
The Office of the Auditor General has just issued a report on an investigation it carried out into allegations schools were seeking payments when accepting out-of-zone students.
It's found five Auckland schools - Kohia Terrace, Cornwall Park District, Mount Albert Grammar, Auckland Grammar, and Epsom Girl's Grammar - had been asking for payments for out-of-zone students.
The Auditor General's found for three of the schools; Mount Albert Grammar, Auckland Grammar, and Epsom Girl's Grammar, the fee was sought for administrative purposes and the Ministry of Education had given mixed guidance on practice.
The investigation's also found that for the three schools there was no connection between the payments and students getting an out-of-zone place.
With regard to Kohia Terrace and Cornwall Park District Schools, they've been told to stop charging the fee and refund affected families.
