A former priest says the Catholic Church needs to come up with other solutions to report child sex abuse.

It comes after opposition from the church in Australia to prosecute priests who don't report confessions of child sex abuse.

The New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference agrees they shouldn't break the seal of confession in these cases.

Melbourne RMIT University Professor and former priest Des Cahill told Mike Hosking that if they are against the idea they should come up with other alternatives to help child welfare.

"I'd like to suggest to the Catholic bishops that they make it mandatory for all priests, as a condition for giving absolution, that the criminals should report themselves to the criminal justice authorities own up to the abuse."
