The Soap Box: NZ agrees Trump's a chump

Donald Trump's a chump. It's frightening that he's even contemplating what is arguably the most powerful position in the world and even more frightening that he's currently the Republican frontrunner to take it.

Chances of that actually happening though are surely remote. The American voter isn't that thick even if they have dished up some doozies in the past.

Trump's latest publicity stunt, to draw attention to himself, is his ridiculous call for Muslims to be banned from entering the United States, saying many of them nursed a hatred of the country. They should be kept out, he argued, until the country's representatives can figure out what's going on.

If he's President they'll never figure it out. His comments have not surprisingly drawn international derision and of course our lot have put their bob's worth as well in with some of them showing they're also not devoid of being delirious.

The Kermit's Metiria Turei, who'll offer a comment on anything if a telly camera's pointed in her direction, dismissed Trump as an idiot which few would argue with. But then went on to make an idiotic statement, saying she's amazed it's being reported in New Zealand. Why would anyone pay attention to such a man, she mused, saying it has no relevance to New Zealand!

But not one to miss an opportunity she had a go at John Key for thinking that the only good use of women going to Syria is as jihadi wives. Of course he doesn't think that at all, he was simply asking our chief spy if that's why young women were going to that war torn country.

Then another verbose political co leader Marama Fox was on the Trump hunt saying he's ignorant and concluding "that's America for ya." Yeah well he's got to win the Republican nomination and get elected first before you can arrive at that sort of conclusion.

But also drawing the long bow was the rambunctious Westie Paula Bennett, who rightly said Trump's comments were both ridiculous and appalling, but then aimed the arrow at Labour, citing their analysis of Auckland housing data in Chinese surnames, suggesting it's in the same league as Trump's tirade.

It's no where near it of course and let's hope Donald Trump gets no where near the White House. Surely it's a preposterous prospect. He'd make the former actor President Ronald Reagan look like Einstein!
