Frustration and fear is starting to boil over for farmers caught up in the Canterbury fire.

Flames are ripping through the family farm of Vaughan Jones' partner, and he said it's hard to watch.

"The Fire Service believe the choppers were meant to be here at six, that's what they keep telling us."

"We know a few of the local guys, we just talked to them again and they're like we don't know what's going on. They haven't been informed about what's happening with the air support."

Well over 120 fire fighters and support crews are back out today battling the fires raging in the Port Hills near Christchurch.

Several homes had to be evacuated overnight around Governors Bay.

Locals have been staying at the local primary school.

Fire fighters have been put right beside their homes to protect them.

A dozen helicopters will be in the air today, and planes are also being used to help the fire fighting effort.

Overnight flames got within 150 metres of the Sign of the Kiwi function centre.

The recently-opened Christchurch Adventure Park is closed while it's also under threat.

Rural fire officer Douglas Marshall said fatigue is an issue for some fire fighters but they're being rotated as much as possible.
