It seems bizarre to be talking about surfing and snow in the same day, but “Surfing for Farmers” kicks off in less than a fortnight around the country.
The initiative was founded in 2018 by Stephen Thomson, who saw his rural community struggling with the increasing pressures of life on the land and went about offering an outlet.
It encourages farmers to take a couple of hours each week to head to the surf to help better manage stress and improve mental health.
Surfing for Farmers won the FMG Rural Champion Award at last week’s Beef + Lamb New Zealand awards in Christchurch.
Thomson said the team were “chuffed” to receive the award.
“We can’t win these awards without the help of all our volunteers, sponsors and farmers that come along.
“A massive thanks to everyone that helps keep this wheel turning."
