Simon Bridges: National will have an 'upset victory' in 2020

Simon Bridges may have had a good week in his own words, but the National Party leader is still defending his position as leader.

The latest political poll shows National is the most popular party on 45 per cent to 43 per cent for Labour. However, Jacinda Ardern remains the more popular leader at 41 per cent, while Bridges remains on six per cent.

However, Bridges told The Country that he is confident that National is having a good time. He says that the Government is not delivering on their promises.

He says that National is the most popular party under his leadership.

"I think we are on track to do what many would call an upset victory in 2020."

The Country's Jamie Mackay put it to Bridges that he won't be Prime Minister if the Greens get past five per cent, but Bridges says that the margins are so small.

"Even the weakest Labour oppositions against John Key were fine, and we're strong. We're a few minutes into the second half of the rugby game, and we're a fitter, stronger team."

He says it is "desperate" to bring up New Zealand First as a factor, but Mackay says that rural voters are looking to vote strategically to prevent a Labour-Green coalition.

Bridges again doubts that will happen.

"National will stay where it's at or gets a bit stronger and New Zealand First isn't there, on that sort of analysis, we could be the Government."
