Mother's Day Gardening gifts

1. Buy Mum a houseplant, and not just any houseplant, but a potted Hen & Chickens fern. Asplenium bulbiferum is the ultimate motherly fern... all along the fronds are wee ferny babies that you can simply pick off and pot up for more. How lovely is that?

2. For the mother-in-law, there's the sharp-edged Mother-in-law's tongue, Sansieviera trifasciata.

3. African violets are still considered nana-ish, but they're quite delightful in a little pot by your bedside, and they flower for ages. Like, years. Sweet and charming and inexpensive. A good gift for children to give to grandmas on Mother's Day.

4. Buy a big bag of spring bulbs - it's not too late to plant tulips, anemones, ranunculus, hyacinths and other bulbs for a splash of colour.

5. Or instead of buying your mother a gift, why not give her the gift of some time in her garden. Be her slave for the morning: do some weeding, leaf raking, planting of potted colour. After breakfast in bed of course.
