PAUL STENHOUSE: Technology

Facebook's Cambridge Analytica headache isn't going away..

It cannot be overstated how big this story has been in the USA. It's been on the morning news shows and every network's nightly news every night with tutorials on how to check your privacy settings and check what data they have on you.

They've lost 10% of their value since the scandal broke.. that's $57 billion US dollars.

Zuck is going to need to go to testify in front of Congress.

Apple has called for privacy regulations -- but that's a shot at both Facebook and Google as Apple has always played inside its walled garden. In the tech world they're notoriously restrictive when it comes to user data - often to the point that developers get frustrated with the limitations of their platform.

Facebook was due to launch its own smart speaker.. that's an internet connected microphone in your home.. so you can see why they're now shelving that idea for the time being. It was coming in May, but who knows now?!

The battle for the best camera on a phone continues..

Huawei is China's biggest smartphone maker and it's going big to try and win over the west with THREE cameras on the back of its latest phone which all combine to take one photo. Add to that.. a 24 mega pixel selfie camera!

BUT.. US intelligence agencies warned Americans that they should not buy smartphones made by Huawei over security concerns.. although they didn't offer any evidence.

BOB CAMPBELL: Wine

Bob's Best Buy: Devil’s Staircase Pinot Noir, Central Otago $24.99

$25 may not seem to be a bargain but the average price of Central Otago Pinot Noir over the past five years is $49.04 – at $24.99 less than half. That’s a bargain for a silver medal quality Pinot Noir. It’s streets ahead of most other wines in its price category. The recommended retail price is $24.99 but Glengarry in Auckland are selling it for $23.99 or you can order it by the six-bottle case from online retailer, The Good Wine Co, for a bottle price of $22.65 including shipping.

I partly chose this wine because it goes well with lamb, a classic choice over Easter. But Pinot Noir is very food-friendly and suits a wide range of dishes. I plan to smoke some salmon over Easter and this wine will match it perfectly. Pinot Noir is also about as people-friendly as red wine gets.

RUUD KLEINPASTE: Gardening

Seeing it is autumn, a number of bulbs need planting in the garden:

Tulip

Fabulous early spring colour – historical stuff with the Dutch making heaps of money out of often virus-ridden “varieties” (early 1600-s AD)  Fl 3000.00 per bulb (while the average yearly wage of a skilled craftsman was around Fl 300.00) – the bubble burst in 1637 AD

These days they are a bit cheaper and more reliable

Grow well in South island with very cool winters – up north they need winter chilling (taking out of soil and put in fridge for 8 weeks!). In mild climates it pays to plant later in the year – say: May/June)

But in South Island, planting the bulbs can start in a few weeks; Order them now!!!

Great bulb outlets: Bulbs direct/Garden Post/NZBulbs/Fiesta Bulbs/Hadstock Farm in Springston

Work the soil to 20 cm deep in sunny to semi-shade position; (generally bulbs prefer well-drained soils)

Plant 15 cm spaced and 15 cm deep – warmer climes: plant them a bit deeper (20 cm deep);

A bit of mulch over the planting site will keep weeds down. Bulb fertiliser is recommended and after flowering some blood and bone will feed the green leaves.

Do NOT cut those green leaves after flowering: they gather sunlight (photosynthesis) for re-stocking the food reserves inside the bulbs underground.

Narcissus Daffodils

Prep the soil to 40 cm or so – daffodils’ roots go way down!

Plant them 10 cm deep and spaced to 10 cm apart. Well-drained soils work best – perhaps under deciduous trees…  Hagley park is a great example. In full sun is OK too.  Mass planting works well and the bulbs will come up year after year

They are not as fussy as tulips in terms of cool winter soils; apart for the far north, the whole of NZ is daffodil country. Bulbs will multiply

Crocus the lovely smelling spring flowers

Plant the corms in autumn a couple of centimetres deep and closely-spaced for best effect; they are best lifted after the foliage dies down

Of course, Saffron is a crocus… but it flowers in Autumn (March)

Leucojum also known as snowflake

Special place in my heart: we used to have a rare and endangered native species in the wetlands where I used to roam as a nature nerd in the Netherlands.

Many different varieties now, flowering in early spring; planting in early April

Bulbs in containers

Most of these bulbs do well in containers: Picture a terracotta pot with these plants massed together… you can shift them inside when they flower to enjoy – or put them on the patio so you see them through the ranch-slider

CATHERINE RAYNES: Books

12 Rules for Life by Jordan B Peterson, Penguin $40

The Shepherds Hut by Tim Winton, Penguin $45

ANDREW DICKENS: Music

Stan Walker 'STAN' (EP) - Andrew's verdict 8/10.

Well if he has worries about his voice I ain’t hearing it here.  His thank you song to his Mum is hokey and slightly clunky and that’s what makes it so lovely.  It’s heartfelt.  This is Stan’s most religious recordings yet.  I surrender sees him surrender to Jesus while Whakmoemiti is totally in Te Reo, (by the way Whakamoemiti means Praise).  Both have beautiful vocals and palpable passion.  After his tribulations I feel this is the beginning of a new dawning of Stan as an adult performer with one of the best RnB voices in the business.
