RUUD KLEINPASTE: Gardening
CITRUS
First of all: winter is when many citrus varieties produce fruit. I Love the cut-in-half grapefruit in the morning with a slight sprinkling of sugar on the top.
There was a time when every garden in Auckland had a grapefruit tree. Here are my recommendations to plant:

Grapefruit
“Wheeny is probably the most famous old variety in NZ; thin skin and pale fruit… not terribly attractive, but fabulous to eat
“Golden Special” is another great variety, large and relatively easy to peel; almost seedless

Oranges
Harwood late is a NZ Variety (chance seedling from a “Valencia”)
Best’s seedless is a great one for the frost-free zones
Blood Orange is an acquired taste – I got hooked on those while working in Sapin

Mandarins
Satsuma varieties (such as Okitsu, silverhill, Miho) always great
But “Encore” is a smallish fruit mthat is easy to peel – kids lunch boxes – and hangs in tree for a long time

Lemons:
“Yen Ben” and “Lisbon” are some great varieties of true lemons; nice and zingy
The most commonly-grown one is “Meyer”, but as this is a cross between a lemon and a mandarin it is a lot sweeter; Meyer is also the hardiest variety in terms of frost!

Frost protection;
Citrus originate in tropical and subtropical regions
Frost-cloth or large “frost bags” you can slip over small trees in pots (like in Canterbury)
Put them under eaves, against a brick wall (residual heat)

If they do get frosted a bit, don’t prune till well into spring – leave the frosted leaves to protect the foliage further down!!

Fertiliser:
No need to do anything now – they may be producing fruit but technically they are dormant and won’t take in any nutrients at all
Give them a feed (General fert or citrus fert) in spring (Oct/Nov) and again in January – water well in
They will respond to regular feeding, so a third application around March will be good for them
Alternatively mulch their roots with good compost for extra nutrients. Avoid competition by grass under the tree!
And no concrete paths over the root zone either: lime will leach into root zone and causes deficiency patterns

Most of the Citrus is available on dwarfing rootstock; Flying Dragon is a range of small, grafted citrus varieties; ideal for large pots and small gardens

BOB CAMPBELL: Wine
Wine of the week: A sparkling wine that's a personal favourite. It’s Deutz 2010 Blanc de Blancs from Marlborough, a vintage sparkling wine made from Chardonnay. It’s deliciously drinkable when released but I like to keep it for a few years so that it becomes more mellow and richer with age.

MIKE YARDLEY: Travel

ANGELINA GREY: Music
Guns'n'Roses - Appetite for Destruction - Angelina's verdict: 9.3 out of 10
Appetite for Destruction has turned 30 and Angelina thinks it's just as relevant now as it was in 1987. Give it a listen!!
