More fitness centres will close their doors unless they can increase gym-goer numbers.
Exercise gyms are only at 70 percent revenue and owners are asking the Government for help.
Exercise New Zealand chief executive Richard Beddie told Kate Hawkesby gyms owners are concerned.
"It’s just not sustainable in the long term, and unless those numbers change, there will be some major issues."
Beddie says gym owners aren't asking for a big cash handout, but want help with negotiating with landlords to reduce commercial leases.
