Associate Health Minister: We haven't reached the peak yet

Big questions for Cabinet on which parts of the country will be at what alert level after tomorrow night.

New Zealand will remain at Alert Level Four until at least 11.59pm tomorrow.

Cabinet will meet again today to decide on the next move where they're expected to extend restrictions, at least in Auckland.

Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall told Mike Hosking there are now almost 300 locations of interest across Auckland where the Delta strain of Covid-19 may have spread.

“We know with Delta that there can be transmission in those large areas. Many people in Auckland have been tested, so that’s reassuring, but there’s always the risk that some people at those locations of interest haven’t been identified.”

New Zealand recorded 21 new community cases yesterday, taking the outbreak's total to 72.

Verrall doubts we've reached the peak.

“It could still be a wee way away, maybe could be another five days or so before we see the impact of the transmission that was happening in the community prior to lockdown pass through.”

Jacinda Ardern will announce the next steps for alert levels at 4pm.
