Health warnings over potentially toxic algae in Lake Rotorua will likely last weeks.  

It can be harmful for people and animals.  

People should avoid contact with water if it looks discoloured, smells unusual, has green or brown particles or scum, or leathery algae mats floating or on the lake floor. 

Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell told Tim Dower that it's brought on by the hot temperatures.
