He's known as Dr Shane - and it turns out new National Party deputy leader is Sober Shane, too.

Judith Collins has been reconfirmed as National leader - with new deputy Shane Reti by her side.

Both were selected unopposed following a nearly two-hour Caucus meeting in Wellington today.

Shane Reti told Heather Du-Plessis Allan he likes a lemon, lime and bitters.

Reti says he can't recall ever having an alcoholic drink.

He says he had a Mormon upbringing - and as he got older, it became his own choice to abstain.

"I can enjoy fizzy drink and juices and all sorts of other things."

Reti says he is inactive in his faith, though his parents remain active in the Mormon church.

He also says that he voted no on both of the referendums.

On euthanasia, Reti says "I spent a whole career nurturing and protecting life, and I'm not about to change that now."
