National Party leader Judith Collins has revealed how she spent her summer - getting cracking on her first novel.

After breaking the news to Heather du Plessis-Allan last year that she would be working on a book, Collins confirmed today she spent her summer working out the characters and the plot.

However, it might not come to bookshelves for some time.

"I think the rest is going to have to wait for quite some time."

She says that there will be politics in it, and it will be "clearly set in Parliament".

Asked if we would recognise some of the characters, Collins said we would.

"I decided that there are a couple there I might have to merge."

Earlier today, Collins delivered a State of the Nation speech, where she outlined five priority areas she says need urgent progress.

They're the Covid 19 response, Economic recovery, Hardship and public safety, Housing and infrastructure, and Technology.

Collins has written to the Prime Minister - calling for emergency legislation to make it easier to build houses.

She told du Plessis-Allan that politics need to be put aside so more houses can be built.

"We just need to get houses built, and we've seen it before in Christchurch. We got the houses built, and we ended up with some pretty stable prices."
