Teen smoking at record low in New Zealand - survey

Teen smoking is at a record low, but there's still work to do.

Just 1.9 percent of almost 29,000 Year 10 students surveyed by Action for Smokefree 2025 say they smoke daily.

Associate Health Minister Jenny Salesa told Larry Williams it's the first time that number's fallen below two percent, and is down from 15.2 percent 20 years ago.

She says 5.8 percent of Maori girls smoke daily, down from 10.1 percent more than six years ago.

"Maori boys are also smoking less than in the past, with 4.5 per cent declaring that they smoke every day. Obviously, we still have a long way to go."

Despite the smoking rate decreasing across the board, Salesa says female Māori teens were found to have a high rate.

"Almost 6 per cent of Māori girls who took part in the survey tell us they smoke daily and while that rate has decreased, it's still higher than the overall rate of 1.9 per cent."

The Government hopes to close these gaps with the Smokefree project, and acknowledged it "still has more work to do to achieve equity amongst all New Zealand teenagers".

The report also saw a decrease in teenagers vaping, particularly among students who smoke. It also found that there is "still no evidence to suggest vaping is a gateway to cigarette smoking."
