Employment numbers have continued to improve around New Zealand following the Covid-enforced lockdown this year.
Stats NZ released numbers today showing job having risen in June by 2053, to 2.2 million, following a rise of 14,399 jobs in May.
As at July 17 the wage subsidy extension was supporting around 437,000 jobs.
Infometrics senior economist Brad Olsen told Heather du Plessis-Allan the numbers show things are getting better, but they are not back to normal.
"That's the balance point moving forward is that we will continue to strive towards that pre-pandemic level and we are getting closer. But at the same time there's both a number of kiwis out there who still don't have a job.
"And at the same time there's a lot of people in jobs that are precariously employed, post September when that wage subsidy ends you do worry that those job numbers are going to start to spiral down even faster."
Mr Olsen says young people are still bearing the brunt of job losses.
"People aged 30 and above, they've regained most of their jobs.
"But those under 30 still in a very hard position."
