New school guidelines aimed at making all students feel welcome, regardless of gender identity or sexuality, are being welcomed.
The PPTA has released a fresh set of reccomendations, covering gender neutral uniforms, toilet and changing facilities, same-sex ball dates and ways to tackle bullying.
Transgender advisor Kim Prance told Nadine Higgins school blueprints may need to change.
"As far as bathrooms, showers etc. maybe new designs could be looked at for schools, so that any remodeling when it's being done those could be taken into consideration."
However, Prance said New Zealand is making real progress.
"The uniform policy is a very easy one to make into a unisex policy for schools. That's really nothing much."
PPTA rainbow taskforce member Shawn Cooper told Mike Hosking many schools have acted already.
"Schools are responding to this. They're recognising that for the students, for whom this is a major issue, it can have huge impacts on their feeling of self-worth."
