New South Wales police have won a Supreme Court bid to ban a Black Lives Matter protest in Sydney today.

Officers took the organisers to court, amid concerns the rally would breach coronavirus restrictions.

Some protestors say they will still take part in today's event, despite the ruling.

Assistant Police Commissioner Mick Willing says people need to do the right thing.

"The supreme court has made this decision, which we all must abide by.

"In that regard, I would ask people to abide by this decision. Police will be out in numbers."

In Melbourne, police have warned the organisers of today's rally there, that they'll be fined if it goes ahead in defiance of coronavirus restrictions.

Tens of thousands of people could converge on Melbourne calling for an end to indigenous deaths in police custody.

Premier Daniel Andrews has told Victorians not to attend and health authorities say there is a strong chance of the virus spreading if they do.
