UPDATED 1.38pm: A tree could be sacrificed to make way for a speed camera in Porirua.
The camera on Whitford Brown Avenue was installed recently as part of a nationwide roll-out in high risk spots, but raised the ire of motorists because it was obscured by the tree.
Assistant commissioner of road policing Dave Cliff says the area has been dangerous in the past, so they want the camera to stay.
"Clearly we don't want the camera hidden, so we're just working with the District Council over there to get that tree moved a bit, so that the camera is completely visible."
56 new cameras being rolled out
Wellington motorists are being warned they'll be at the mercy of at least four new digital speed cameras by the end of the month.
Two new cameras on Wainuiomata and Waiwhetu Roads will be switched on by October 13.
Cameras at State Highway 2 between Horokiwi Road and the Petone off-ramp, and State Highway 1 near the Molesworth Street overbridge, will also go live on October 20.
The cameras are part of a nationwide roll out, which will see 56 new cameras in operation by April 2016.
