A Morrinsville dairy farmer fined for breaching effluent disposal laws tried to bribe council inspectors.

Farming company B & V Signh Limited has been fined over $40,000 and convicted of three unlawful dairy effluent discharging offences.

Director Bilkar Singh asked inspecting officers to not report the matter, and to take water samples that didn't show any environmental impact.

He repeatedly asked inspectors how much money it would take to make the environmental breach go away.

Waikato Regional Council Investigations Manager Patrick Lynch says officers have a challenging job as it it, for staff to be subjected to suggestions to act illegally is totally unacceptable.

He says as well as showing a disregard for the environment, this behaviour is appalling.
