Marama Fox has stepped down as Maori Party co-leader.
President Che Wilson says the Party executive supports her decision to resign - in order to focus on issues related to her private business.
This comes after revelations the consultancy company Fox set up less than a year ago was put into liquidation owing at least $70,000 to creditors.
Wilson says they know Fox's absolute priority is to repay any outstanding debts, and they believe that is the right and proper course of action.
He's acknowledging her significant contribution to the Maori Party, and her dedication as an advocate for social justice issues, particularly related to family violence.
