Lance O'Sullivan won't stand for National in by-election

National has put out the call for candidates to stand in the Northcote by-election but Dr Lance O'Sullivan is unlikely to be one of them.

The seat is up for grabs following the resignation of Jonathan Coleman, who held the seat for 13 years.

National leader Simon Bridges says about ten candidates have already put their hands up.

The Northland-based doctor and New Zealander of the Year met with Bridges last week, fuelling speculation he could be the candidate.

However, Bridges says he doesn't see that happening.

"I think it's very unlikely that, for him, being a National Party candidate and MP would be the right call for him."

Bridges also has no insight into rumours Air New Zealand CEO Christopher Luxon might put his name forward.

"Someone who is an incredibly successful chief executive of one of our biggest, most thriving companies will be a welcome addition, but obviously I have no inside knowledge of that."

There is one person Bridges says is unlikely to join the party and that's Lance O'Sullivan.

National will select its candidate on April 15th.
