Wellington's Ngaio Gorge will not reopen until middle of next week, following yet another slip.

Large boulders and rocks are continuing to fall on the road up the Ngaio Gorge in Wellington, halting plans to start clearing it with a digger. The road is the link between central Wellington and the Ngaio and Khandallah areas.

The site has been declared too dangerous to tackle at the moment, and plans to bring in a 20-tonne digger to start work this afternoon have been abandoned.

Engineers and council staff will meet tomorrow to consider options for stabilising the site and clearing the debris.

The landslide grew significantly overnight following the initial slip in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said it is now too dangerous for crews to do anything today.

He said more material has come down and apparently, it was quite spectacular.  He added that they are not going to put anyone in danger and are going to monitor the situation.

There have been more than 460 slips across the Wellington region this winter, amid repeated waves of heavy rain.
