TradeMe bans sale of certain dog breeds

Pugs, British bulldogs and French bulldogs can no longer be sold on Trade Me.

The auction website made the announcement on Wednesday, due to the three breeds suffering from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which causes lifelong health issues such as breathing during exercise.

Trade Me Policy & Compliance team leader James Ryan says after consultation with the NZ Veterinary Association, "we felt we couldn't, in good conscience, continue to allow the sale of animals who suffer (these) issues".

SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen says pugs, British bulldogs and French bulldogs are "lovely little dogs", but their exaggerated physical features cause them considerable welfare problems.

"For those New Zealanders looking for a new addition to their family, we ask that you instead consider adopting one of the thousands of rescue dogs who are looking for homes," she said.

NZ Veterinary Association chief executive Mark Ward says vets have long-held concerns for many breeds of cats and dogs whose welfare is compromised from being bred to look a certain way.

"Without correctional surgery, large numbers of these dogs live with chronic pain and distress, with many owners and breeders unaware that their dog is suffering," he said.

The ban extends to crossbreeds as well as purebreeds and comes into effect on March 1.

Trade Me also does not allow the selling of the American pit bull terrier, Brazilian Filo, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa and Presa Canario breeds.
