UPDATED 4.39PM: Sir Ian Athfield has been described as one of the country's finest architects.

Sir Ian, who was knighted in the New Year's honours for his services to architecture, has passed away in Wellington.

President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, Pip Cheshire, says he had a huge influence on the industry.

FULL INTERVIEW: Pip Cheshire - Ian Athfield's death

The sheer individuality of the work and the unusual nature of many of the forms and shapes and developments which he employed certainly makes him a pioneer," he says.

"His own house is of course an example of somebody who flew in the face of convention, of city planning, and made a most extraordinary collection of spaces."

Cheshire says Sir Ian will also be remembered for his good humour, and thoughtfulness.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says she can't think of any other architect who's created such a range of buildings.

She says from private houses, to social housing, apartment blocks to civic buildings - he's made a real difference to Wellington.

Some of Sir Ian's more recognisable works include Buck House at Te Mata Estate winery in Hawke's Bay, and Wellington's Civic Square.

Sir Ian's family says "Ath" was "a treasured and respected husband, father and grandfather."

"He loved to bring people together and would have enjoyed people gathering and sharing memories at this time."

"Although he had not been in good health recently, his sudden passing was unexpected and has had a great impact on those who knew and loved him."

"Funeral details will be advised as soon as possible but it can be confirmed that a service to celebrate Ath's life will be held in Wellington next week."

"The family will not be making any further comment at this time and asks that their privacy be respected."
