One new measles case linked to Auckland Airport has been confirmed by Health New Zealand, bringing the total number of cases to 19 country-wide.

Health NZ has also removed one earlier reported case from the total because the individual returned overseas, where they were diagnosed and will be counted as a case there.

It is not clear which country this case returned to.

A spokesperson for Health NZ said the new case was confirmed on Tuesday evening, is domestic and linked to Auckland Airport.

Health NZ is also in contact with the case and providing them with support.

“No other new cases of measles have been identified by public health at this time.”

Health NZ’s usual contact-tracing process is ongoing, with people known to have been at exposure events being contacted.

“Locations of interest for this case are still being assessed and will be published online as soon as they are available,” Health NZ’s spokesperson said.

Exposure events have been identified at Auckland Airport and exposed staff are being given rapid immunity checks.

This follows the case of a Wellington College student who travelled through both Wellington and Auckland airports before being confirmed as a measles case at the weekend.

Health NZ national clinical director Dr Susan Jack said several locations of interest were connected to this specific case and contact tracing was in place for those in the same household as the individual, people who took the same school bus and attended an exam at Wellington College, and people who were on the same flights during their infectious period.

Health NZ said travellers going through international ports are regularly assessed for infectious diseases and if they report feeling unwell are provided with healthcare advice and support as needed.
