It's an incident the Grinch himself would be proud of.
A large Christmas tree complete with decorations is being removed from the suburb of Glengarry this morning, after three separate acts of vandalism.
Invercargill City Council roading manager Russell Pearson said a large number of decorations have been destroyed.
"The fairy lights have been cut, and the baubles on it have pretty much been smashed," said Pearson.
"We'd have to remove the tree and completely redecorate it, and given the time and the ongoing problem, we feel it's probably best at this stage just to remove it."
Contractors have repaired the ornaments twice, but this morning the Council decided to remove the tree altogether.
A second suburban Christmas tree, based in South City, has also been damaged, but the damage was minor.
Invercargill City Councillor Rebecca Amundsen said Glengarry remains a great place, with wonderful people and strong community spirit.
“It’s so disappointing that the thoughtless actions of a few people can ruin it for everyone else,” Amundsen said.
Pearson said the council is hoping to bring a Christmas tree back to Glengarry next year.
"We would like to hope that the community as a whole would appreciate us putting a bit of brightness in the area.
"We put it in a place in the park area where perhaps families could have picnics and it could be seen by everybody."
