Huge blaze "should never have happened"

Firefighters in Hawke's Bay say a huge blaze there should never have happened.

The Mahia Peninsula fire ripped through 35 hectares and destroyed a house yesterday.

It's been contained, and extra crews are arriving this morning to fully extinguish it.

Three fire crews stayed overnight and more are due to arrive back around 8am this morning.

Acting Hawke's Bay principal rural fire officer Te Aroha Cook says Mahia's extremely dry and been in a total fire ban since before Christmas.

She says the fire should never have started in the first place, but they're still trying to find out how it happened.
