Sixty FIRST Union Go Bus drivers have gone on strike this morning, over having to work split shifts over 14 hours - but only being paid for eight.

But Go Bus spokesperson Russell Turnbull says the drivers are only being paid for the hours they work... and that's the nature of split shifts.

"It's a fairly traditional way of operating services and nothing has really changed over the 20 past years I've been involved in the industry.

FIRST Union members say they're made to drive for five and half hours without a break, but Turnbull says there are plenty of break opportunities.

"Typically every trip, which on average lasts about 40 minutes, a driver would get a four minute break before they start their next trip," he says.

"It depends on the day, sometimes with traffic conditions it might be more or it might be less."
