There's a glimmer of hope for the Lower Hutt retailers put of out action by the swarm of earthquakes.
More than 100 retailers from the city's 182-shop Queensgate mall are out of action for up to three months due to one of the buildings needing to be demolished.
Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace said the council will do everything it can to help the businesses out, including a fast-track consents process "to make sure that anyone who does want to re-establish will be given that opportunity."
Wallace said there are empty stores in the area some retailers could move into.
"We do have vacant shops on the high street, so we will work to get them into some of those facilities over the Christmas period," he said.
In Wellington, the demolition of a Molesworth Street building has been delayed due to high winds, and is scheduled to go ahead on Monday.
Both the North and South Islands have been wrecked by sizeable aftershocks following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which on November 14 damaged infrastructure and isolated towns like Kaikoura.
