A car “screamed through” a Gisborne roundabout travelling on the wrong side of the road before spinning out of control in an early morning police chase.

Following the incident around 7.20am, police said six young people were arrested after a series of alleged vehicle thefts in Gisborne overnight.

Security footage of the drama was caught on camera by a local business, Kevin Hollis Glass & Aluminium.

The CCTV showed a vehicle skidding through the roundabout intersection on Roebuck Rd before it was later surrounded by police vehicles, with its bumper partially hanging off and doors swinging open.

Business manager Nathan Horsfall told the Herald he didn’t hear the incident unfold, but some of the workers in the workshop heard it coming and went outside to investigate.

“It just came screaming through, and then the police [were] all out there,” he said.

“It was quick, it was quick coming up to that roundabout,” he said.

Horsfall said it was scary to have this happen so close to them and warned it could have been much worse if more pedestrians had been in the area at the time.

“They could have spun this way too into our yard, or it could have spun into anyone walking,” he said.

Horsfall said the business was able to capture this footage because a camera had recently been installed overlooking the roundabout, which “gets a lot of action”.

“We’ve seen people hit on their bikes, we’ve seen people hit off their motorcycles, but this is the first time we’ve caught anything,” he said.

Police spike fleeing vehicle

Senior Sergeant Bryan Smith said police located one of three vehicles that had been reported stolen from various locations across Gisborne during the night.

“The vehicle was signalled to stop, however, the driver failed to comply and fled,” Smith said.

He said a pursuit was initiated, and road spikes were successfully deployed.

The vehicle was then safely brought to a stop near the intersection of Tolerton Ave and Birrell St in Elgin.

“Six youths were apprehended at the scene,” Smith said.

He said five youths are due to appear in Gisborne Youth Court today in relation to a range of charges stemming from the incident.

Police are seeking information on the alleged thefts and are urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police.
