UPDATED 11.03AM: Corey Webster has been stood down from the Breakers basketball team after being charged with assault.

The point guard has been suspended for one match and will miss tomorrow night's game against the Illawarra Hawks.

Webster was arrested and charged with assaulting another man following an incident at an Auckland bar in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He's been a standout for the Breakers and Tall Blacks in recent years after twice failing drug tests, first for cannabis in 2010 and then for synthetic cannabis a year later.

Former Tall Blacks guard Brendon Pongia urged against a knee-jerk reaction following his latest offence.

"We can't just throw him out and say 'That's it'. We're going to go through the process again and deal with it in the right way," he said.

The Breakers host the Illawarra Hawks tomorrow night before visiting Melbourne United on Sunday.
