A Cambridge man, who recently arrived in New Zealand, has died after a gardening accident at his own home.

Paradeep Singh, known affectionately as Deep, was confirmed to have died at his property yesterday by Waikato Police.

Senior Sergeant Mary van Dongen said officers were requested to assist ambulance crews at a Cambridge address about 3.15pm on May 20.

“One person died at the scene,” she said.

“The matter has been referred to the coroner.”

It is understood Singh had been working up a tree but the exact cause of death is unknown.

Hato Hone St John said they were alerted to the incident at 2.58pm yesterday and one rapid response unit and one operations manager responded to the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand referred any comment on the matter to St John and police.

Paradeep married his wife Kamal in December and she moved to New Zealand six months ago to begin her married life with him.

“Deep passed away in a horrific accident today,” a Givealittle page for him said.

“Kamal is only 29 years old and is now alone in New Zealand, with no income or source of funds to manage this heartbreaking situation.”

The page aims to raise funds to help take Paradeep’s body to India so his family can perform his final rites and see him one last time.

“Deep’s mother in India is paralysed and his father is elderly.

“His family is facing unimaginable grief and urgently needs support.

“Funds raised will help cover the repatriation costs to India, Kamal’s flights, and support for Kamal and Deep’s family during this extremely difficult time.”

The fundraiser received more than $18,000 of donations in the first 18 hours it was active, with a final goal of $50,000.
