Work on getting Kaikoura's water system back up and running will start this morning.

The town is quickly running out of drinking water and other vital supplies and many people are homeless.

Defence Force helicopters have been shipping in supplies but they've struggled to keep up with demand.

Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray said getting the water flowing again is the top priority.

"Work going on, equipment coming in for fixing water infrastructure, so there's plenty to do. Our key projects are water, sewer and the access at the moment.

"I know we're getting low on water but we've got some options here we believe. We've had quite a considerable number of experienced people come in and working on that. They're working on an alternative water supply."

Defence Force helicopters will continue evacuating tourists and bringing in supplies into Kaikoura this morning.

Four NH90 helicopters have been transporting people to Christchurch and bringing back basic supplies to the cut off town.

About 5000 kilograms of food, water, diesel and hygiene products will get to the town in the coming days.

Airforce Wing Commander Scott McKenzie said it's important people keep getting the supplies they need.

He said areas just outside of Kaikoura are also struggling.

Mr Gray is hopeful the road access into Kaikoura will be restored by this weekend.

Transport Agency workers are trying to open the inland road between Culverden and Kaikoura.

Mr Gray said it's important access is restored as soon as possible.

But it could be months before State Highway One out of Kaikoura is re-opened.
