Scene examinations will continue this morning after the body of a woman was found on Main Rakaia Road on Sunday.

Police have launched a homicide investigation into her death.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said her body's been removed but they'll stay to continue forensic examinations.

"The CIB along with the coroner are working to complete a formal identification of the victim. Until this has been done, and her family have been advised, Police will not be in a position to release her name."

It's thought to be connected to a spate of possibly suspicious fires which also started on Sunday in Selwyn.

Only a few firefighters will return to the scene this morning to check for hot spots.

DOC Mahaanui operations manager Andy Thompson said they'll run the thermal imaging camera over them just to see if there's any hotspots that need any further attention.

"It's just after the night to make sure nothing has changed."

One farmer on Main Rakaia Road had had around 40 litres of petrol stolen on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said they'll continue to look into every possibility today.

"There is a large team working on the investigation around the clock. The woman's body has now been removed from the scene however police and specialist staff will be remaining to complete further forensic investigation."

Police told another farmer, who owns the property where the body was found, they were looking for two people in a 4WD.
