A crash has closed State Highway One at Woodend, in Canterbury - and it'll remain closed until early afternoon.

A tanker and a light truck collided on State Highway One- Main North Road shortly before 6am.

The road is closed between Pa and Woodend Beach Road while fuel is pumped out of the tanker.

A crane will then be brought in to right the truck.

NZTA is asking drivers to slow down on the detours through residential areas and allow extra time.
