UPDATED 4.06pm A “huge” fire in Te Atatu this afternoon can be seen from several kilometers away as black smoke billows into the sky above it.

A local man told the Herald he had seen up to 16 fire trucks driving toward the fire, which he could see from his bedroom window at his home about 2km away.

“It’s been huge, billowing black smoke across the landscape.”

The man said the fire had been raging for about 15 minutes by 3.20pm and up until 3.15 he had seen high flames coming from the site as well.

Emergency services arrived at Te Atatu’s McLeod Rd at 2.45pm today where a large warehouse building was “well-involved in a building fire”, a fire spokeswoman said.

She said there was no one in the building at the time of the fire and there were no reports of injuries.

A total of 12 trucks attended the scene along with support vehicles to control traffic.

Firefighters were currently dampening down hot spots while a fire investigator is currently at the scene.
