A fire that sent black smoke into the skies above Christchurch has been brought under control.

Emergency services were called to a blaze on Alvaston Drive in Halswell that broke out just after 4pm.

Six fire crews attended the blaze.

A ZB reporter on the scene says crowds of pedestrians gathered to watch the smoke billow across the street.

Two flats were involved in the blaze.

One of the residents told ZB that they believe it was a heater that caused the fire.

"There was a couple of big bangs shortly after we arrived. I think it might have been gas bottles or something. No one was hurt, that's the blessing."

A spokesman for Fire and Emergency says that the fire has caused substantial damage, with one flat believed to have partially collapsed.

They confirmed that no one was hurt.

They are not sure of what caused the fire and are investigating.
