UPDATED 4.33pm Emergency services have rushed to a day care centre on Auckland’s North Shore.

Police can confirm a four-year-old boy has died at the Angel's Childcare Centre in Takapuna.

Detective Sergeant Ross Clapp says early indications are that the child has died following an accident on playground equipment however police are still working to establish the full circumstances of what has occurred and it's too early for police to comment on specifics.

A man outside the daycare, who did not wish to be identified, said he was a friend of the family whose child had died.

He said the little boy's family were members of their tight-knit community and had lived in the area for some time.

"It's really sad," he said.

The child’s family has been advised and will be supported by police and Victim Support.

A Worksafe spokesman has confirmed that they have been advised of the incident and are currently making “initial enquiries.”
