A relative of two men who were shot in their Auckland home in the early hours of the morning has described seeing his uncle covered in blood from three gunshot wounds.

Up to 20 people reportedly descended on a Manurewa home and shot two people around 4am this morning.

A relative told the Herald he believed the gunmen were from Black Power and confirmed it was in retaliation for an earlier incident. He would not specify the nature of that incident.

He said his cousin was shot in the shin while his uncle was shot three times, including twice in the thigh.

The relative lives in a neighbouring property and said he felt sick when he arrived to find his uncle covered in blood. His uncle had asked for water, he said.

The relative said the nature of the attack, and where the men were shot, suggested the assailants were not shooting to kill.

”Beat him up first, then held him and shot him.”

His uncle and cousin who were shot are now in hospital, he said.

The attackers arrived about 4am, when everyone in the home was asleep.

Another of the man’s uncles ran down a driveway away from the home. The gunmen shot at him four or five times but missed and he escaped over a fence, the relative said.

Another witness told the Herald about 20 people rushed a home in the dead-end street.

The man said he had seen members from the gang who he believe were behind the attack visit the home on previous occasions.

He had been told the attack was in retaliation for an incident in the past few days.

The assailants were all wearing black.

The young man told the Herald he went outside to see what was happening and feared that he could have been shot.

“Scary.”

Another neighbour described the attack as cowardly.

He said he had experienced no end of trouble since moving into the street a couple of months ago. There were frequent visitors to the home where the shooting happened, the neighbour said.

A police spokesperson said the two people received gunshot wounds following an incident around 4.30am on Oratu Pl in Manurewa.

“Both people were transported to hospital,” they said.

“We are working to establish exactly what took place and at this stage there is no further information available.”

On Sunday morning, police had cordoned off the driveway leading to the home and armed officers were stationed outside. Detectives interviewed neighbours and were seen scouring the ground for shell casings.
