Workers for carpet maker Cavalier Bremworth will find out today whether their employer plans to follow through with a restructure that would cut 65 jobs.

A downturn in demand for woollen carpets means the company is looking to move its profitable felted yarn operations from Christchurch, to a bigger plant in Whanganui.

While the wool spinning operations in Whanganui would move to Napier.

FIRST Union Christchurch organiser David Bristow said once the decision is made, staff will have the certainty necessary to assess their options before the Christchurch plant closes.

"It's about how they plan between now and October because some people are starting to look for jobs. They just really want to get on with their lives, so that they can start planning for the future."

Bristow said as much as Cavalier Bremworth might want staff to move, it's looking very unlikely.

"I don't believe there'll be too many, if not none. I'm not really seeing a lot of interest about shifting to Whanganui or Napier from the people here in Christchurch, so they're going to have to start looking for jobs down here."

The company's indicated 68 jobs in Whanganui and 36 in Christchurch will go.

But it hoped 39 of those would be taken up in new jobs at the Whanganui plant, and in Napier.

FIRST Union said the company may close the Christchurch Radford Yarns Plant completely, as a result of the restructure.
