Firefighters have have been called to a blaze at a central Auckland apartment building.

It's on the third floor of The Strand Apartments in Augustus Terrace in Parnell.

Fire and Emergency says four firefighters in breathing apparatus are attacking the flames.

Senior station officer Chris Lind said, “We got called to a private monitored fire alarm and on arrival the first arriving officer notice there was smoke in the apartment so we established a second alarm which is the equivalent to about six appliances and crews.

“We then forced entry and discovered a fire in the kitchen area.

“As a result of the fire, the alarm system has done its job and given early detection and we were able to contain the incident to the kitchen area.

“Probably in terms of the kitchen area it was 50 per cent damaged. It was mostly smoke and a little bit of fire damage and very little water damage.”
