In New Zealand we’ve got a giant L&P bottle, a giant donut, and a giant salmon, amongst other giant sculptures.
So when a group of semi-retired farmers saw the giant ginger bottle house in Australia, they were inspired and came home to Southland’s small town of Waikaia and starting building their own.
It took a couple of attempts, but 30 years on, it’s still standing.
Every day this summer we’re looking at a detour you can take on your summer road trip, and today we’re looking at Waikaia’s Bottle House which is attached to Switzers Museum.
Museum Chairperson Mairi Dickson joined Tim Dower to talk about the unique attraction.Â
