Emoji use in the workplace is very common, but it can be tricky navigating across different generations.

Research released today shows one in two people have used emojis in the wrong context, getting 17 per cent of them into trouble.

Victoria University linguistics professor Miriam Meyerhoff says it turns out people have different expectations around emojis in the workplace.

"Given that amongst older people, use of emojis in the workplace can be seen as unprofessional or inappropriate, that can lead to some miscommunication younger people are not expecting to trigger."

She says people should stick to the safe emojis when writing your next message.

"The most popular emoji is the smiley face emoji, and it is the emoji least likely to be ambiguous or subject to misconstrue."
