The First Word: Monitoring criminals, All Blacks squad

Two more criminals cut off their electronic monitoring bracelets over the weekend. There's an element of copycat going on here but these bracelets only work if they're not removed and monitored properly.

We are now told that more than 100 offenders on release in the community were not monitored correctly after glitches with the new electronic monitoring system.

Corrections needs to lift their game. If the company contracted to monitor these criminals isn't up to the 24/7 job they should be replaced. The community is at risk if the bracelets aren't monitored properly.

The system is a blatant failure if criminals can cut these bracelets off and do a runner.

There are some 3000 to 4000 offenders being monitored electronically and it does look like serious criminals are among them. They should not be. Serious criminal offenders like child sex offenders are a big risk to the community. More so when they can simply cut them off and monitoring is slack.

There was much fanfare around the naming of the All Black squad for the World Cup and why not? Social media went crazy yesterday with photos of players at airports heading for Wellington, so by the time the team was announced it was pretty much public knowledge.

The selectors need firepower out wide hence the selection of Waisake Naholo and Nehe Milner-Skudder. They call it risk and reward. The rest of the squad looks pretty good, and players can be flown in if there's an injury, so although 12 players may have missed out, they will be on standby. History shows that there will be injuries.

The story of Naholo's broken leg and the miracle curative powers of a leaf from Fiji looks like it was another media beat up - Grant Fox said he was always on track to return a couple of games into the tournament anyway.

Exciting times for the All Blacks and fans and they may be favourites but it will be far from easy.

A South African political party has taken the South African Rugby Union to court in a move that could see the Springboks miss the Rugby World Cup.

The ANA (Agency for New Agenda) is protesting that the Springboks squad doesn't have enough black players and they are seeking an order to force players and officials to surrender their passports.

Government policy is 30% black players and the squad selected is 29% black.

What the quota can amount to is a black player being selected based on the colour of their skin - straight out discrimination. I wouldn't want to be selected on such a basis and I doubt a black player does either.

Policy that encourages non-white participation is a good thing, but a quota of blacks for the Springboks is insidious. Its as stupid as a quota for whites in South Africa's black dominated football team.

84% of under-18 players in South African rugby were black Africans according to the SARU boss Jurie Roux.

Stands to reason more and more blacks will play for the Springboks then. That's fine. Quotas are not.
