There's concern from vegetable growers about urban sprawl around Auckland.
A new report out highlights the danger of it, saying it is taking up New Zealand's most productive land.
Third generation grower in Pukekohe, Bharat Jivan told Kate Hawkesby the area supplies New Zealand with potatoes and carrots for two months of the year in spring.
He says he and his family can't just up sticks and leave.
"Pukekohe with its relatively frost-free soils, availability of water - it's very free draining, you can't take those characteristics elsewhere."
Jivan says the area is important for food supply on a nationwide scale.
"Pukekohe supplies New Zealand for two months of the year exclusively through the spring months exclusively with carrots and potatoes."
