Westpac Stadium, spectators and promoters have been left disappointed after an international ice hockey game was canned.

The anticipated event at the stadium had to be cancelled after winds caused fencing on one side of the rink to fall over.

It was the third attempt for the match between Team USA and Team Canada.

The game was initially mean to be played on Saturday but was delayed and postponed til Sunday after a pipe burst that contained a freezing agent for the ice.

About 10,000 spectators were expected to turn up to the event.

Westpac Stadium's Chief Executive Shane Harmon says they're gutted.

"This is the first event in nearly twenty years of events at this stadium that we've had to cancel so it's something that we don't do lightly and we're very sorry for both the promoters and all of those ticket holders."

One fan leaving the stadium says they were disappointed after turning up last night to see the game and again today.

"We were wanting to relive our first experience that we had 18 years ago in Canada - if Queenstown wasn't full then I'd probably jump on a plane and head down and watch the game."

Westpac Stadium apologised to ticket holders and say refunds will be available.

Many fans spoken to after yesterday's cancellation questioned why the Stadium was chosen to host the event in the first place, with some saying this wouldn't have happened if Wellington had a large covered venue.
