A preferred solution for the America's Cup bases is close to being agreed between Mayor Phil Goff and Economic Development Minister David Parker.

It is understood they are now close to being on the same page on a "compromise" solution for the bases. However, it is not clear how Emirates Team New Zealand views those plans.

Goff and Parker met ETNZ members including Grant Dalton on Friday.

The solution discussed between Goff and Parker could be a mix of the council's option for a cluster of bases around Wynyard Basin and Parker's preference for a land-based solution on Wynyard Point, also known as the Tank Farm.

The council and Team New Zealand in December had an agreed position at Wynyard Basin for a cluster of bases on a 75m extension to Halsey Wharf, a 75m extension to Hobson Wharf, and on the existing Wynyard Pt wharf.

However, Parker – also Environment Minister – has pushed hard for a more land-based solution to prevent further incursions into the harbour. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also previously spoken out against extensions into the harbour.

With discussions ongoing, including possible commercial negotiations including to move hazardous facilities off the Tank Farm site, all parties involved would only provide short statements.

Spokespeople for Goff and Parker provided the same statement, saying the two met with a small group of officials and ETNZ representatives on Friday. The meeting made "good progress".

"Consenting issues are being progressed and the Auckland Council and the Government are working together on those."

A Team New Zealand spokesman said: "The process is ongoing after Friday's meeting, but progress continues with both government and council".
