Supporters of Auckland's St James theatre say a $1.5-million top up is a drop in the ocean of what is needed.
Arts, Culture and Heritage minister Maggie Barry has announced the boost for the 89-year-old building, to help with earthquake strengthening costs.
Save the St James spokesperson Tina Plunkett said it is appreciated, but will not go very far. She said restoring and building something of its size is going to take a larger donation to even think about it.
Tina Plunkett said it is an emotive election issue for Aucklanders.
She said they are hoping for the national heritage fund to step up and help with the project.
